Seventh Journey, the first Australian contribution to the canon of Arctic literature, is the leader’s inside story of Australia’s first expedition to the Arctic. The expedition itself began as an inspiration in 1977. Nine years and two million dollars later it was struggling to survive early winter storms on the Arctic coast. It was 11 years before the book was begun and 13 years more before it was published as an Author’s Private Edition of 200 copies. From inspiration to publication was a journey that spanned 33 years, which must be some kind of record.
In addition to how the author overcame every disaster imaginable, the story involves some wonderful characters, from Arctic explorer Lord Shackleton (son of Sir Ernest) and British Antarctic Survey Director 'Bunny' Fuchs to Prime Minister Bob Hawke, America's Cup skipper John Bertrand, Antarctic explorer Dr Phillip Law and philanthropist Dame Elisabeth Murdoch. It is hoped that Seventh Journey will soon be available in bookshops in Australia and the UK.
One F*****g Thing After Another tells the story of two years of exploring the west coast of Greenland, and what happened in between. The book’s title was inspired by a famous retort in Alan Bennett’s play, The History Boys. And indeed, this book is just that, the true history of one almost unbelievable thing after another. It is hoped this lively and entertaining book will be ready for publication in 2011.
Earl has several more fascinating non-fiction books planned, covering subjects that include survival, leadership and sustainability. More details later.
